Stobbe recounts his experiences as an infantry sergeant mostly in France. He was on a landing crew that came to Utah Beach in Normandy, France a few days after D-day. He and the men in his company made their way to the front lines, and fought for five months against the Germans there. He draws upon his memories of the war and also his several trips back to France since the war, and gives a wonderful recounting of the details of his service. He has attempted to retrace his company's steps, and has been relatively successful, although he admits there are a few places he is unable to locate. He mentions his feelings of having been watched over by God several times and of instances where he found bullet holes in his clothing but not in him.
